Blue Sapphire Golf Course, Bo Ploi
Blue Sapphire Golf Course, located just outside Bo Ploi, Kanchanaburi, has long been regarded as a budget-friendly but underwhelming track among local golfers. However, recent visits reveal that the course is undergoing a quiet transformation that could restore its standing in the region.
Value for Money
At just 750฿, including green fees, a shared cart, and a caddy, Blue Sapphire offers outstanding value—particularly in comparison to other courses in the region, including many par-3 and executive layouts. While the carts are clearly dated, they remain functional and reliable. The inclusion of a caddy at this price point enhances the overall experience and reinforces the course’s strong value proposition.
Course Conditions
Conditions on the day of play were notably improved compared to past visits. The grounds were actively being maintained, with staff visible on greens and fairways—a welcome change for those familiar with the course's historically poor upkeep.
We played Course B, which begins with a scenic but lengthy cart ride to the 10th tee. While not ideal, this detour does allow a useful preview of the layout. The fairways were well-mown and playable, and the greens—though slightly slow—ran true and were in solid condition. Several tee boxes on Course B require work, with some areas temporarily sanded and awaiting grass regrowth. One green (B2) stood out as subpar but still within acceptable playing standards.
Course A showcased further improvement, beginning with a newly built canteen at the first tee offering refreshments, balls, and friendly service. The greens here were significantly quicker than Course B’s—noticeably so—but remained receptive to spin. Chips and approach shots held the surface well, rewarding aggressive shot-making. Among local tracks, Blue Sapphire is one of the few where players can confidently throw the ball at the pin without expecting excessive roll.
Playability and Layout
The overall layout is enjoyable, with a mix of scenic lake-side holes and forest-lined fairways offering a peaceful round. For mid- to high-handicap players, Blue Sapphire is forgiving without being dull. Fairways are generous, the rough is manageable, and the pace of play is brisk thanks to low traffic.
One persistent issue is overwatering on the front sections of many greens, which becomes a problem when short pin positions are used. These overly damp areas severely limit roll-out and compromise playability for casual and club-level golfers. Adjusting pin placements to avoid these wet zones would be a simple yet impactful improvement.
Future Potential
An additional 2 x 18-hole courses are currently under construction, which will make this venue one of the biggest here in Kanchanaburi The new Mine course has its first nine reportedly playable. Early feedback suggests it features a more dramatic design, winding through the former sapphire mine landscape. If current maintenance efforts continue, Blue Sapphire could become a go-to destination for golf groups and weekend players seeking value without sacrificing experience.
Conclusion
Blue Sapphire Golf Course is re-emerging as a serious contender among local golf options. With visible improvements, excellent value, and a tranquil setting, it delivers far more than its modest price suggests. While not perfect, the experience is increasingly positive—worthy of both local loyalty and visiting golfers.
